Far Cry 3: First Impressions
I’m calling this blog first impressions however I’ve been pretty much addicted to FC3 ever since I picked it up four days ago. Why? It’s bloody fantastic, that’s why! The thing is I haven’t heard many people talking about this game, most likely due to the fact COD Black Ops 2 was released at around the same time, so I thought I’d let all those who haven’t played it know what they’re missing out on.
The game takes place on a tropical island paradise where a group of friends have taken an adventure holiday, however during a skydiving trip they land right into the hands of the Pirate Lord Vaas who plans to extort cash from their parents and sell them into slavery. The main character escapes his captors and embarks on a quest to free his friends before it’s too late. Not the most original plot-line I grant you but it’s the characters that make FC3 special, and with that said we’ll take a brief look into the mind of the aforementioned Vaas, we must tread lightly.
Simply put: Vaas is Far Cry 3. The savage warrior will terrify you with his psychotic behaviour and brilliant dialogue, but at the same time you can’t help but be intrigued as to what made Vaas into the demon that he is. Every second he is on-screen your attention is captured but is he truly a monster or just another victim of this deceptive paradise? You’ll want to find out and this is what will make you play FC3 until the very end.
The thing is it’s a long road to the end of FC3 as there’s so much to do! When you’re not saving your friends from ruthless pirates you can take up hunting wild animals, go treasure hunting for artifacts thought to have been lost for centuries or maybe you just want to explore every inch of this world as it’s so breathtaking. This is only scratching the surface and suffice to say you’ll never be bored, and the best part is it’s entirely up to you how you play FC3, but bear in mind these aren’t just throwaway activities as everything here has a purpose.
When you first begin the game you’re only able to carry one weapon, a measly amount of ammunition and maybe your toothbrush, so how are you going to transform yourself into the one man army that’s needed to defeat the blood-thirsty pirates. Well FC3 has some beautifully integrated RPG elements that give meaning to everything that you do. So if you want more weapons you need to craft a new holster by hunting down animals and skinning them for their pelts. Want some new toys to take on Vaas and his henchman? You’re either going to have to go behind enemy lines and open up trade routes, or go looting for the cash required to buy that shiny .44 Magnum. There’s also a levelling up system, similar to the one in Borderlands, that allows you to unlock new abilities as you progress.
In a nutshell it’s clear Ubisoft have been paying attention to the market for the last few years and brought us a game that leaves us speechless. They have taken the storytelling prowess of Bioshock, the RPG elements of Borderlands and their own brand of open-world freedom, and created a game that transcends those that came before it. Far Cry 3 is certain to go down in history books as one of the most innovative games of its time and I’ve only spoken about the Single Player mode. There’s still the Co-Op mode and Online Multiplayer to delve in to! So if you haven’t played it yet, make sure you don’t miss out.
Will the Xbox 720 always have to be online? Are gaming consoles going the same way as the arcades?? And most importantly where is the gaming community going to find itself in the future??? Here’s my thoughts on the subject.
Here is the article from Kotaku I mentioned in the video.
